32 Empowering Bible Verses for Forgiveness

The following Bible verses about forgiveness offer guidance on how to release others from the harm they have caused. Forgiveness is one of the most precious gifts God has given to us. It is a key element of our Christian faith and a marker of our spiritual growth.

Forgiveness is the act of pardoning someone for an offense or sin that they have caused, absolving them from their guilt and shame. When it comes to receiving forgiveness from God, the Bible is clear that it is only through the grace of God that we are able to receive His forgiveness. Romans 3:23-24 states, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” This means that Jesus has paid the debt we owe because of our sin. Therefore when we confess our sins to God, He forgives us. He releases us from the consequences of our sinful actions.

Forgiving others can be extremely difficult, but it is essential for our spiritual health. Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6:14-15 to pray, “forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” Just as God forgives us by offering grace and mercy, we must also forgive those who have caused us harm.

The consequences of unforgiveness can be severe. Unforgiveness can lead to cycles of bitterness and resentment that can negatively impact our relationships and our spiritual life. It can also lead to physical ailments such as chronic pain, fatigue, and depression. No one wants that. God wants us to experience his grace in all of our relationships and that often comes through forgiveness.

No one is perfect. The mistakes we make don't have to end in broken relationships. The following Bible verses about forgiveness offer us a way forward in our relationships with God and others, helping us to let go of resentment and restore our relationships.
