Romans 12:2 - 5 Steps for Spiritual Renewal

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Romans 12:2

What is the Meaning of Romans 12:2?

In Romans 12:2, the apostle Paul urges Christians not to let the values and practices of the world shape their thinking and behavior. Instead, he encourages them to allow their minds to be renewed by God's truth, so that they can understand and follow God's will for their lives.

The renewal of the mind involves a transformation of the way a person thinks and lives, which can be achieved through the power of the Holy Spirit as we reflect on God’s word. By being transformed in this way, believers can discern what is good, acceptable, and perfect according to God's standards.

5 Steps for Spiritual Renewal

The world values material wealth, power, and self-promotion. These values can lead people to prioritize their own desires and interests above the needs and well-being of others.

In contrast, the values of God's kingdom are centered on love, justice, and personal sacrifice. God calls us to put others first, seeking God’s agenda instead of promoting our own.

The values of the world often prioritize external appearances and success, encouraging people to strive for fame, power, and wealth. In contrast, the values of God's kingdom call us to humility and to focus on the things that truly matter, such as loving and serving others and living in obedience to God's will.

Ultimately, the values of the world are fleeting and temporary, while the values of God's kingdom are eternal and enduring. By choosing to align our lives with the values of God's kingdom, we can find true fulfillment and purpose, and experience the fullness of God's love and grace.

Aligning our values with God’s requires that we think differently about ourselves and our role in the world. The following steps can help us to experience the spiritual transformation promised in Romans 12:2.

Develop a deeper understanding of God's word

The main way to renew our minds is to study and meditate on the Bible, which is the primary source of God's revelation to us. By reading and reflecting on specific Bible verses, we can learn more about God's character, his will for our lives, and how to apply his teachings in practical ways.

Pray regularly and seek God's guidance

Another important aspect of the process of renewing our minds is to cultivate a consistent prayer life. When we pray, we open ourselves up to God and seek his guidance and direction for our lives. Pray is an act of submission. We lay down our lives before an almighty God. By praying regularly, we can experience a deeper sense of God’s presence and be more attuned to his leading.

Seek accountability and support from other believers

We are not meant to journey through the process of spiritual transformation alone. God made us for community. We are not self-sufficient. We need one another to experience the fullness of creation and to become all that God intended us to be. It is important to surround ourselves with other believers who will use their spiritual gifts to offer support, encouragement, and accountability as we grow in our faith.

Practice spiritual disciplines

There are certain practices that can help us to cultivate a deeper relationship with God and to renew our minds. In addition to Bible study and prayer, fasting, observing times of solitude, confession, worship, and service to others are important spiritual disciplines that can help our faith grow. By incorporating these disciplines into our lives on a regular basis, we can experience greater spiritual transformation.

Surrender to God's will

Finally, experiencing spiritual transformation requires a willingness to surrender our plans to God. This may involve letting go of certain personal ambitions that are not in line with God's will, and choosing instead to follow him and seek his guidance.

By following these steps and seeking to align our lives with God's will, we can experience the spiritual transformation promised in the Bible.

A Prayer for Renewal

Dear God,

I come before you today seeking your guidance and transformation in my life. I know that I have not always aligned my thoughts and actions with your will, and I recognize the need for change and growth.

I ask that you would renew my mind and help me to see things from your perspective. Help me to let go of old patterns of thinking and to embrace your truth and love.

I pray that you would guide me in my journey of spiritual transformation, and lead me to the path of righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ and obedience to your will.

I surrender myself to you, Lord, and ask that you would use me to share your love and grace with others. I trust in your faithfulness and your power to transform me into the likeness of your Son. Use my life to bring you glory.

In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
